Ante

A small  bet contributed by each player to seed the pot at the beginning of a poker hand. Most Texas hold'em games do not have an ante, as they use "blinds" to get money in the pot.

All-In

To bet or call using all your chips.

Bad-Beat

When a complete underdog catches a river card to win the pot.

Big-Blind

The larger of the two blinds typically used in texas holdem. The big blind is usually 2 times the small blind. The big blind is always two seats to the left of the dealer.

Blind

A forced bet put in by one or more players before any cards are dealt. There is usually a big blind and a small blind

Board

Refers to the the community cards.

Bottom Paid

Having the lowest pair after the of the cards on the board. Example - You have Q-3 and the board shows 9-J-A-3-5. You have the lowest (bottom) pair.

Burn Card

The discarded card in Texas Holdem. Before the flop, the turn, and the river, 1 card is discarded ("burned") face down.

Button

Represents who is acting as the dealer that round.

Buy-In

What you have to pay to enter a tournament. If a tournament is $15 to enter, the "buy-in" is $15.

Call

To bet the minimum to continue. Example - Is someone raises $10, a call would be to match the $10.

Check

Not betting. As the big blind, you can check if no one raises.

Connectors

Having cards that will help connect a straight. Example - Having pocket cards such as 4-5 or Q-K.

Draw Draw

Having a hand that can't win. Example - Having a straight when you opponent has a flush house. No matter what cards comes next, you still are losing.

Family Pot

When Everyone calls pre-flop. (I love family pots)

Fish

A player who constantly calls trying to make a hand. Example - someone who is 1 card away from a straight, a flush, fulll house and will call to try to get that card. He is "fishing" for a specific card. Good players love players who fish, because they tend to just give away their money. (Can hurt when they hit their card though)

Flop

First three community cards. All face-up.

Heads-Up

With only two players left, they are going head-to-head or Heads-up against each other.

Kicker

A card used to determine the best hand. Example - If 2 players both have 2 pairs A-A-10-10 and player 1 has a K, while player 2 has a 8, player one has a higher "kicker" and will win the hand.

Muck

To fold your hand. After the showdown and you've seen that you've been beaten, you can "muck" or just fold your cards without showing them.

No-Limit

Having no limits on what you can bet. Certian poker games are no-limit or limit games. No Limit means you can go bet as high as you want or go All-In at any time.

Nuts

The best possible hand given the board.

Playing The Board

Using all 5 community cards. Example - You have A-K while the board shows 4-5-6-7-8.

Pocket Cards

The cards you receive face down.

Pocket Pair

When you have a pair with your Pocket cards. Example - You are dealt K-K in texas holdem. You have Pocket Kings or a "pocket pair".

Pot-Committed

When you have placed so many chips in a pot where you "have to" or should call any raise.

Pot-Limit

Having Limits on how much you can bet/raise in a poker game where you can only raise to the amount thats in the pot.

Quads

Four of a kind. K-K-K-K-8

ReBuy

Is an option to re-enter a game or tournament. If you lost an all-in and want to continue to play, you can re-buy yourself back in. Some tournaments have a limit on how many times you can re-buy.

River

The 5th and final community card.

Short Stack

To have the lowest amount of chips at the table.

Showdown

After the river card, the remaining players turn their cards over to see who has the best hand. Its a "showdown" between the players.

Slow Play

Playing a strong hand as a weak hand in hopes that other players will bet or call your small raises.

Small Blind

The smaller of the two blinds typically used in texas holdem. The small blind is usually half the big blind. The small blind is always one seat to the left of the dealer.

Splash The Pot

To throw your chips in the pot to where they "splash" everywhere. Poker players don't like when other players splash the pot. It is also a great quote from Rounders(poker movie that you must see).

Split Pot

A pot that is shared between players, because they had equal hands.

Suited

When your pocket cards have the same suit. Example - when you are dealt 8-10, both being hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds.

Tell

A clue, hint, or something a player does that gives away someones hand. Example - Oreos in Rounders (Again, you should watch that shit!)

Tilt

To not be focused while playing. Playing hands you wouldn't normally, starting to fish for hands, or bluffing crazy amount of money/chips. If you lost on a bad beat, it is said that you can go on tilt.

Top Two

Having top two pairs using your pocket cards and the community cards. Example - You have 9-A and the board shows 2-3-7-9-A.

Trips

Having three of a kind. Example - You have 8-8 and the board shows 2-4-8-Q-A. You would have trip 8's.

Turn

The fourth community card.

Wheel

Straight from ace through five. A-2-3-4-5.
