7 Card Stud rules

Here are the basics for playing 7 Card Stud. In 7 Card Stud there are no community cards and every player receives 7 cards. The basic principle it to use the 5 out of the 7 cards you were dealt to create the best hand. You start off with 3 cards, which 2 are face down and 1 is face up. You then will receive 3 more cards face up, followed by 1 card face down. The strategy of this game is to see what others players have and to figure out if the 3 cards facing down will give them a good hand.

Going through the game - Detailed

  • 7 card stud begins with everyone receiving 3 cards, where 2 cards are face down and the third card is face up. The first round of betting starts with the person who has the highest card facing up and moves clockwise.
  • After the first round of betting is over, everyone still in is dealt a 4th card, which is also dealt face up. You now have 2 cards facing down and 2 cards facing up.  Another round of betting takes place. Betting will start with the person who has the highest hand using the cards that are face up.
  • When the second round of betting is complete, everyone still in the hand will receive a 5th card face up. (You now have 2 cards face down and 3 cards face up) There is now a third round of betting.
  • After the third round of betting, everyone still in the hand will receive a 6th card face up. This is the final card that you receive that is face up. (You now have 2 cards face down and 4 cards face up). There is now a fourth round of betting.
  • You now will receive the 7th and final card, which you get face down. (You now have 7 cards - 3 face down and 4 face up). This is where the last round of betting occurs. You take 5 cards out of the 7 you have to make the best hand. The person with the best 5 cards wins the pot.

Note: In some 7 card stud games, there is an ante from every player before the first cards are dealt. There sometimes is also a bring-in, which is kind of like a blind, after the first 3 cards are dealt. The bring-in is sometimes the person with the lowest card facing up, or sometimes the highest card facing up. The first round of betting with start with the first person to the left of the bring-in. If there is a bring-in, you will play it like a big blind, where you must at least bet the amount of the bring-in to continue.
