Most online poker sites have a feature that will allow you to label your opponents as a certain “type” of player. These player types include calling station, fish, shark, bomb, maniac plus many more. Some of these player types can be good, but getting labelled with one of the bad ones can become detrimental to your bankroll. Learn how to spot these kinds of players so that you can become familiar with which players you should avoid and which players to go after:

Calling Station: These are loose-passive players that prefer to let other players force the action and call with almost any pair. They like to see lots of flops and are involved in many showdowns. The best way to make money from these players is to value bet big hands so that they continue to chase their pairs, or weaker hands. Bluffing these types of players is not a good idea though, as they are more likely to call with weaker hands.

Maniac: A maniac player is someone that likes to raise a lot and get involved with many hands. You need to be careful with these players as it can often be hard to put them on a hand. Avoid playing these types of players out of position unless you hold a big hand. Wait for bigger hands, then trap them by letting them bet into you. They are more likely to call on big draws also, so try to make your moves on them later in a hand (on the turn or the river).

Shark: This is the type of player that you want to be. Sharks have a tight-aggressive style and can be difficult to read. They wait for big hands and good position then play them very aggressively. Avoid getting into hands with these types of players out of position, and if you do, only stay in the pot if you hit really well on the flop.

Rock: These players will play very tight and only play really premium hands (high pocket pairs and high hands). When these players come in betting it is usually best to avoid getting involved with them unless you have a really strong hand.

Fish: These are usually new players or very weak players. Fish like to play a lot of hands and chase pots on draws. They will call down to the river with almost any pair, so value bet your big hands against them. Most of the biggest poker sites

Bomb: Similar to the maniac, these players are extremely aggressive and scary to play against. They try to win a lot of pots by bluffing, semi-bluffing and raising big. These players can usually be knocked off a hand by check raising them when you connect on a flop as they will almost always continuation bet after a flop where they have raised pre-flop.

Whether you are playing poker online, or offline, it is always a good idea to keep notes on your opponents and study their play. Once you are able to figure out what type of player they are, it will make it much easier to extract the most chips from them.

Good luck at the tables!
